Roger B. Hill was born March 29, 1895 in Peabody, Mass. A member of the class of 1918 at the University of Maine, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and received a master's degree in chemical engineering from the university in 1924. The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus.
